Algebra

Algebra is a branch of mathematics that uses letters and symbols to represent numbers and quantities. These letters are called variables, and they help us generalise patterns and relationships.

Examples:

  • x + 3 means a number plus 3.
  • 5y means five times a number.
Basic Terms in Algebra

Constant: A fixed number (e.g. 2, 7, 10).

Variable: A letter representing an unknown number (e.g. x, y).

Coefficient: The number multiplied by a variable (e.g. in 4x, coefficient = 4).

Term: A part of an expression separated by + or – (e.g. 3x, 5, -2y).

Expression: A combination of terms (e.g. 3x + 2y – 7).

Importance of Algebra
  • It helps describe real-life situations mathematically.
  • It makes problem-solving systematic.
  • It prepares students for higher mathematics and logical reasoning.
