Similarity: Similar Figures and Enlargement

SIMILARITY: SIMILAR FIGURES AND ENLARGEMENT

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students should be able:

(i)To use ratios and proportions to find measures of similar figures

(ii) Obtain the scale factor of similar figures.

SIMILAR FIGURES

Two figures are similar if they have the same shape but different sizes.

Conditions for Similarity:

Two shapes are similar only when:

  • Corresponding sides are in proportion and
  • Corresponding angles are equal

Hence, all regular polygons are similar.

ENLARGEMENT

If two objects are similar, then one is an enlargement of the other. In an Enlargement, the scale factor is very crucial.

Hence, If two objects are similar, then one is an enlargement of the other.
